Do real boys stand a chance anymore?

It seems, men are no longer competing with each other at the gym or in the pub or even in the magazines. These days, men are competing against an unbeatable foe. The captivating and undeniable allure of the supernatural.

More and more often now the media is being saturated with sexy supernatural beings that are just familiar enough to become unavoidable objects of desire.

Men are often accused of wanting what they can't have. But ladies, so are we. So show us a buffed up, blood sucking vampire with his shirt off and we will go weak.

A fine example being Vampire Diaries hotties, Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder. Both BAMFs and both very sexy. Because they're vampires? I don't remember falling about over Boone when I watched Lost. (But my, Ian Somerhalder... rawr)

Both, unfortunately, off the market. Paul's married and Ian's banging cast member Nina. Lucky thing she is.

Another example of supernatural temptations is, of course, a fan girl favourite: R-Pattz as Edward Cullen.

R-Pattz isn't conventionally sexy but, oddly enough, that seems to make him more attractive. Maybe it's the good, old English charm. The best of us have it. ;)

Or show us a sparkling fairy and we'll go gaga!

Edward Cullen may be a 'sparkling fairy', but I definitely would. Is it the pointy teeth? The super speed or the mighty strength? Whatever it is, it has fangirls with raging girlrections.

And for all the werewolf fans:

Another supernatural heart throb that make girls melt.

Another English gent playing an American vamp (Is it because we're pale? Or because we have bad teeth?) is super sexy Stephen Moyer as southern vampire, Bill Compton.

There must be something to this theory because this is the third of our sexy vamps to get jiggy with their on-screen, human love interests. Anna Paquin (True Blood's favourite barmaid, Sookie Stackhouse) actually married Stephen Moyer after dating him from the pilot of the show! Obviously the actresses (Nina Dobrev, Kristen Stewart, Anna Paquin) that have worked alongside the vampires approve of their blood sucking ways. As long as it hits their delicate necks just so...

So, this story about a telepathic waitress falling in love with a vampire is a hit for a reason. Is this what we all want? A desire to be special, abnormal... in a good way. A cool, individualistic way. And a fashionably abnormal boyfriend to match? Or do we just want our other half to be 'special'?

This isn't all about vampires though, it's supernatural in general that gets us girls giddy.

Harry Potter and Ron Weasley have an army of fangirls, each and every one dying to be the next Mrs Radcliffe and Mrs Grint. Hell, even Longbottom has fangirls screaming since he cut Nagini's head off! (And a lot of ladies a loving a bit of the Draco.)

So, is it just because Felton and the gang can wave their wands just right? Or have they earned the right to be sexy without magic now?

(And lot of boys want to do despicable things to Emma Watson but I doubt magic has anything to do with that.)

And I know that Snape has some fans that would like to ring-a-ling his ding-a-ling.

This fascination isn't exactly new (I know my mum REALLY fancied Keifer Sutherland in The Lost Boys... and still does now.) Lord of the Rings fangirls (and boys) will still re-watch over and over just to see Legolas and Aragorn. And I don't blame them!

And for the girlies out there like me that just love gaming, there are even sexy aliens out there. Bioware doesn't just produce amazing RPGs, they seem to produce a shed load of fangirls dedicated to their 'romancable'.

The game developers of Bioware seem to have recognised that there are a lot of girl gamers out there and they sure do know what we like. After polls and extensive surveys, the developers offer some tasty man meat.

My personal favourite of their games is, undoubtedly, Mass Effect 2. And the reason, shallow as it might be, is probably a very fine male alien.

Mmmm....

Thane Krios is an assassin, an alien, and a spiritual, widower with baggage (unruly son, impending death). But he is GORGEOUS! And many a fangirl cannot get enough.

However, if this alien is not to your liking, in the same game they offer a more foreign in appearance but more readily available Garrus Vakarian:

He doesn't do it for me but there are thousands of fangirls that want to bang this sniper!

So, is it supernatural or just extraordinary? Something a bit out of the norm. Maybe we're all bored and looking for something exciting to fantasise about on the bus. There has to be a reason for the thousands of fan fiction dedicated to people's favourite aliens/vampires/werewolves/wizards.

Speaking of which, I think I'll get back to my fantasy relationship right now...
